The reason that I listed automobile clubs outside of Itay is that if you are traveling by car and you needed roadside assistance whether inside or outside of Itay, you could contact one of the automobile clubs listed above. In addition, you can request maps for the specific region or country you are traveling in and ask questions at one of their respective offices. Many of these clubs have reciprocal agreements with one another.

Before traveling to Italy, you can usually get a map from your home country's automobile club in your own language. For example, the local AAA office in the USA, has maps for Italy and other countries. Depending on your level of membership, they are "free" or less expensive than a Michelin or an map printed in the country you are traveling to on your trip and either bought in a book store or ordered over the Internet.

One last thing about commercial or store bought maps. You will note that it usually mentions a scale. My rule of thumb is to look at a map of Italy as an overview of the whole country. Nice to have but it shows major highways and depending on the size of this type of map, can be cumbersome to carry around. Then, depending on your travels in Italy, select regional maps, e.g., North, Central or South or maps of specific Regions of Italy. Italy has 20 regions. Finally, there are city maps.

When my wife and I travel to Italy, depending on where we are traveling, we have an assortment of maps that we bought either in Italy or at a bookstore in the US. They are Regional maps, e.g., North, Central or South and maps of specific Regions of Italy. We take the Autostrada (toll roads) when we have to but travel on roads most tourist's are not aware of. We do not travel in a car to large cities but usually take a train and/or public transportation to get around. We will pickup "free" maps from the local tourist offices when we are traveling in a specific region or in town of some size.

Info About Leasing a Car for Italy

Here are some links about leasing a car for Italy:
My wife and I have leased cars from Renault Eurodrivefor 3 out of the last 4 years. We usually fly into Nice, France, pick up the car and either spend 1 -2 nights there and then drive into Italy or spend the night in Ventimiglia, Italy and go to the huge Friday market. The reason that we pick up the car in Nice is that the insurance requirements and fees are less in France than Italy from Renault Eurodrive. For example, there is NO pickup or return fees for France. Also, we have the extra time to travel: 3 - 4 weeks.

However, in 2006, my wife and I spent 3 nights in an apartment listed under APARTMENT RENTAL above, Rent Our Apartment! – Fano, Marche as a guest of the owner, Mark Pukita AKA Marco. We greatly enjoyed spending time in Fano in this new, modern, two bedroom apartment. It is located a block outside the old walled portion of Fano. The apartment is within walking distance of the beach, stores, shops and many fine restaurants. A very nice bakery is next door to the apartment building.

My wife, Martha, and I have only spent a little time in the LeMarche region. We have just scratched the surface of this beautiful and charming region of Italy. In 2005, we just drove through a part of the LeMarche region traveling from Tuscany to Casperia in the Lazio region. In 2006, we spent 4 days and 3 nights in Fano in an apartment and 3 days and 2 nights in Numana at a hotel on the beach. We enjoyed Fano so much that we looked at a few apartments in this Italian town.

Between the two of us, we have traveled at 16+ times to Italy since the late 80's from North to South and East to West and back again. Staying a few days, a week or up to 4 weeks in various regions of Italy. We have rented houses and/or apartments in Tuscany and Umbria and stayed at hotels and B&B's in other parts of Italy. We usually lease a car from Renault EuroDrive for stays over 17 days in Nice and drive over the border to Italy. We have found leasing a brand new card is less expensive than renting a car in Italy. However, this year, I rented a car via AutoEurope because I was in Italy for less than 2 weeks.

Right now, the Marche region is at the top of the list on where we may live when we move to Italy in the next 2 - 3 years. I'll be writing more about this region in the future and after our 2007 trip to Italy.

The reason that I list these links is to provide information for individuals who are dreaming or considering a move to Italy. It is my intent to share these links (web sites) with like-minded individuals who are either in the process of considering or have made the decision to move to Italy for whatever reason. I have attempted to group these links and to categorize them.

These blog postings and entries are not static. As I come across new information, I update the appropropriate blog entry.

* = Blog entry has been updated.

I have found in my research on the Internet that by changing the wording of the search argument or the order of the wording of the search argument on a search engine, e.g., Google, you may get different results. There is so much information to choose from on the internet. Unfortunately, there's a lot of junk that clutters up one's search. I believe in my presentation format that it eliminates the need for one to do multiple searches. Also, I believe this information is a baseline for another individual to conduct their own search and they do not have to reinvent the wheel.

For my blog, I am presenting the fruits of my efforts of just a portion of that information in a format that is of use to my wife and myself for future use and reference (and hopefully, other individuals) as we prepare for our move to Italy.

I am open to suggestions and solicit comments from the readers of this blog for your feedback.

That's it for Friday, 1 September 2006: venerdì, 1 settembre 2006.

Ciao, Ben
