Some of the above mentioned customs and rules about what you eat or drink in Italy are dated and/or written in a "tongue and cheek" style. There are differences in eating Italian in Italy versus eating Italian (read: Italian-American) in the USA. Too many times, I have overheard in restaurants in Italy that a dish served to an American or English speaking tourist "is not like its served at home" or "where's the butter" or "asking for what types of salad dressings are available", etc.

Be that as it may, enjoy whatever you are eating and enjoy your time in Italy.

When some Americans have traveled to Italy, they are disappointed in what they have selected to eat. Some of these individuals have gone to their neighborhood Italian restaurants for years or their favorite Italian eatery or bakery in the USA and expected to eat Italian foods in Italy as they are made in the USA. Sadly, that is not the case. There are 20 regions in Italy and each region has their distinctive tastes and take on Italian cuisine. Yes, there are similarities of dishes but what is served to you in the north of Italy will differ from what is served in the central and the south and also from the Italian islands No matter what or where, you will eat very well in Italy and enjoy whatever you may choose to eat!
