Info about the Autostrade per l'Italia

(LAST EDITED/UPDATED: 30 April 2009)

Here are some links about the Autostrade per l'Italia:

OFFICIAL WEBSITE
TOLL PAYMENT

CAVEAT: Drivers without a passenger in right hand drive (RHD) vehicles will have difficulty paying their respective toll unless their vehicle is equipped with a TELEPASS transponder. At the Autostrade exits, the toll collector's booth or toll payment machine is on the left side of the vehicle!
  • TELEPASS.IT – an electronic toll collection system in Italy using a wireless transponder usually placed on the windshield of the vehicle – In Italian Only
  • Toll Payment – In English, Italian – AISCAT (Associazione Italiana Società Concessionaire Autostrade e Trafori) – Primarily in Italian, English version of some sections of this website
  • TOLLS
    • ENTRY
      • There are separate and restricted lanes for entry onto the Autostrata. There are two types of lanes. One lane is marked either with a sign or with the word, “Biglietto” (ticket) and you take the toll ticket from the machine. The other lane is exclusively for clients utilizing the “TELEPASS” system. This lane is marked with a large yellow sign with the words in blue: “TELEPASS”.
      • If you are in the lane marked “Biglietto” (ticket), please lookout for the cars using the “TELEPASS” system. They do NOT stop or slow down as they enter the Autostrata.
      • Due to the amount of traffic entering the Autostrata behind you, it will be extremely difficult to back up out of the wrong lane.
    • EXIT
      • There are separate and restricted lanes for payment when exiting from the Autostrata. You can pay by credit card, by cash (sometimes there are unattended booths) and by prepayment: TELEPASS or VIACARD – a prepaid card system for the Autostrata. There are 3 types of payment exits on the Autostrata:
        • One lane is exclusively for “TELEPASS”. This lane is marked with a large yellow sign with the words in blue: “TELEPASS”.
        • Another lane is for “VIACARD” and credit cards. This lane is marked with a large blue sign with the words in white: “CARTE”.
        • The last type of payment lane is marked with a large white sign with a picture of coins and bills on it. Usually, there is an attendant. However, this lane at some exits may be an unattended booth but it will accept coins, bills and credit cards.
        • Please approach and enter the correct payment lane. While exiting from the Autostrata, you may only have just a few seconds to decide which lane to choose. If in doubt, choose the lane with a large white sign with a picture of coins and bills on it.
    • Please note: Depending on the size of the actual entry points or exits for the Autostrata, there may be multiple combinations of lanes.
    • Please do not enter the Autostrata without some change or some small denomination of bills or a credit card because some of the exits off the Autostrata are unattended.
TRAFFIC CONDITIONS
  • Infoviabilità – Real Time Traffic – In Italian Only
  • Info - mobility – Listing of various sources for traffic conditions – In English, Italian – AISCAT (Associazione Italiana Società Concessionaire Autostrade e Trafori) – Primarily in Italian, English version of some sections of this website

Info on the Blog Postings/Entries for March, 2007 About, For or On Italy

(LAST EDITED/UPDATED: 10 May 2007)

Here are the titles for my blog postings/entries for March About, For or On Italy:

The above links are current. If anyone has any suggestions for other sites, please feel free to post your comment and I'll update this blog entry. For your specific interest, please search the web for further information using Google .

Please note: I do NOT represent or endorse any of these links nor do I receive payment for listing them in my blog.

The reason that I list these links is to provide information for individuals who are dreaming, considering a move or traveling to Italy. It is my intent to share these links (web sites) with like-minded individuals who are in the process of considering, have made the decision to move or travel to Italy for whatever reason. I have attempted to group these links and to categorize them.

These blog postings and entries are not static. As I come across new information, I'll update the appropriate blog entry periodically.

I have found in my research on the Internet that by changing the wording of the search argument or the order of the wording of the search argument on a search engine, e.g., Google, you may get different results. There is so much information to choose from on the internet. Unfortunately, there's a lot of junk that clutters up one's search. I believe in my presentation format that it eliminates the need for one to do multiple searches. Also, I believe this information is a baseline or starting point for an individual to conduct their own search and they do not have to reinvent the wheel or start from scratch.

For my blog, I am presenting the fruits of my efforts of just a portion of that information in a format that is of use to my wife and myself for future use and reference (and hopefully, other individuals) as we prepare for our move to Italy.

I am open to suggestions and solicit comments from the readers of this blog for your feedback.

That's it for Sunday, 1 April 2007: domenica, 1 aprile 2007.

  • ARTICLE
    • TELEPASS: PAYING WITHOUT WASTING TIME – "A small plastic container, just a few centimetres wide, which you almost forget you have, perhaps attached behind the rear view mirror. A small jewel of technology, which allows you to pay motorway tolls without even stopping, can provide access to restricted traffic zone in the city, or can be used to pay for a parking space at the airport, a major railway station or metro interchange. All these functions are provided by Telepass (www.telepass.it), the small revolutionary electronically controlled system invented and patented by the technicians of the company Autostrade per l'Italia, Italy's largest motorway company. It was filmed by myself en route from Milan, Italy, to the Swiss border via Como, at the final toll station on the A9 motorway before the Swiss border. The film first shows the approach to the toll station, signs on the road and overhead guiding users to the Telepass-only lanes, then the toll station itself, and the toll lanes. Note the acoustic signals emitted by the OBU upon entering and exiting the toll lane and the barrier in the lane being lifted automatically as the OBU emits the first acoustic signal." – Author: Markus Stamm, Date: 2006-02-09 – Source: Wikimedia Commons

If you spend any time traveling on or using the Autostrade, it is worth the price on acquiring a Telepass unit. Especially, if you are traveling during holiday periods or the summer vacation months, a Telepass unit will be very convenient to have and keep you out of the long lines (queues) to pay one's toll.
